Arcola Man Killed in Police Shooting

Illinois State Police are leading an investigation of a fatal shooting by an Arcola police officer in the line of duty on Saturday.

Arcola police officers were dispatched an address on Circle Drive, Saturday at 7:20pm, after receiving a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance involving a weapon.

Police fatally shot 39 year-old Tommy E. Smith of Arcola, after he confronted officers armed with an assault rifle and a handgun. The officer involved in the shooting has not yet been identified.

Officers from the Tuscola Police Department, Arthur Police Department and the Douglas County Sheriff's Department were also called in to assist on the call.

The Douglas County coroner's office has scheduled an autopsy for Smith for Tuesday.
