Every year, thousands of victims of sexual assault treatment and care in emergency rooms in Illinois. As part of that process, police are called in to investigate and in some cases, sexual assault survivors can end up arrested themselves for completely unrelated reasons.

Getting help after a sexual assault is already a difficult process. But in some cases, patients showing up for medical care have been arrested for unrelated matters. We learned how advocates are hoping to change that.

Even with greater awareness, many advocates say we still struggle to understand how sexual assault affects survivors.
