The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Friday completed more than a year of additional study of the North Dakota-to-Illinois Dakota Access oil pipeline, saying the work substantiated its earlier determination that the pipeline poses no significant environmental threats.
The Army Corps of Engineers has decided to deny a permit for the construction of a key section of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The decision essentially halts the construction on the 1,172-mile oil pipeline about half a mile south of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. The decision is also a victory for the thousands of demonstrators across the country who flocked to North Dakota in protest.
Opponents of the Dakota Access Pipeline say roughly 40 people were arrested Saturday during a public demonstration along the construction project's route in southeast Iowa.
