A survey of destruction in Taylorville shows a Saturday tornado left 100 homes destroyed or with severe damage. The survey, which included the areas of the town that took less of a direct hit, determined another 400 homes damaged, but habitable.
Two tornadoes with winds up to 85 miles an hour briefly touched down in Champaign on Sunday around 2 p.m. While no one was hurt, it only took the two tornadoes about a minute to damage a number of homes in the Champaign area, knocking out the power to many more.
It’s Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Illinois. The state saw its first round of severe weather last week when tornadoes killed three people. The National Weather Service is looking for severe weather spotters to help give people advance warning of severe weather.
Heavy storms including tornadoes are blamed for two deaths in Illinois overnight.
Authorities say one person was killed in the LaSalle County town of Ottawa when he was struck by an uprooted tree.
And in southern Illinois, the White County Coroner says a suspected tornado hit a small building near a house in the Crossville area, killing a 71-year-old man and injuring his wife.
