A contentious proposal that sought to ban youth tackle football in Illinois is dead, for now. 

Legislation to ban organized tackle football for children under the age of 12 is headed to consideration before the full Illinois House. The House Mental Health Committee voted 11-9 Thursday to advance the legisation, which is named in memory of the late Chicago Bears football player Dave Duerson.

A new plan in Illinois aims to end youth tackle football programs with the goal of preventing Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative disease of the brain caused by repetitive brain trauma.
