Ten years after voting against the idea, the Champaign City Council gave its unanimous support Tuesday night to a police citizens review panel in a preliminary vote.

The Champaign City Council has given its police department the go-ahead to convene a working group to study the idea of forming a citizen police review board.

While holding back on whether a citizen police review board will be formed in Champaign, Mayor Deb Feinen says the proposal to form a working group to study the issue is a sound idea.

The Champaign City Council considered and rejected setting up a citizen police review board in 2007. Now, at a Tuesday night study session, it will hear a proposal to study the idea again --- through a “working group” set up by the police department.
