Saint Matthew Passion
On this week’s Prairie Performances, an encore broadcast of Johann Sebastian Bach’s oratorio “Saint Matthew Passion.”
Bach’s “Saint Matthew Passion,” written in 1727, is a sacred oratorio based on the Passion narrative from the book of Saint Matthew in the New Testament.
The performance features Sinfonia da Camera; the Central Illinois Children’s Chorus; the University of Illinois Chorale; and the UI Oratorio Society. Tarik Bousselma sings the words of the “Evangelist” and Ricardo Herrera, the words of Jesus. And for this performance, Ian Hobson, founding director, of Sinfonia da Camera turned the baton over to colleague, Fred Stoltzfus. Stoltzfus served as head of the choral division at the University of Illinois for a number of years. This 2013 performance was his final concert before retirement.
