Music of Titans
On this week's Prairie Performances, Friday at 7 pm on WILL-FM 90.9, the Champaign-Urbana Symphony’s exploration of Gustav Mahler’s music continues with the autobiographical Symphony No. 1. This spectacular work, scored for a huge orchestra, draws upon a vast array of musical influences in Mahler’s life, from children’s songs to military marches. Contrasting Mahler’s titanic opus will be Garrop’s “Becoming Medusa”, a fascinating movement that traces the progression of this frightening mythological figure from “gorgeous” to “Gorgon.” You will also delight in the debut of the immensely talented and charming pianist Sun Chang, playing Mozart’s elegant Concerto No. 14.
