Fire Doll Studio

Established in 2011, Fire Doll Studio is an artisan chandlery, crafting beautiful, health-conscious candles of all shapes and sizes while celebrating bold, rich fragrances. Owner and artist Kayla Brown has always loved candles but struggled to find a commercial candle that didn’t aggravate her asthma. Most commercial candles are created with synthetic fragrances and chemical waxes that release airway irritants when burned. So, Brown decided to make them herself, using natural materials including soy wax, beeswax, and essential oils.

While working full-time as a nurse, Brown started selling candles at local markets. Then, after losing two jobs to the pandemic, Brown found a small studio, started a website, and offered curbside candle pickup. She quickly moved into the first Fire Doll location where she started hosting candle workshops and had her first retail space. By Fall of 2022, Fire Doll had grown so much that they moved to a much larger location in the heart of Downtown Champaign where they currently reside. Now, Fire Doll Studio hosts large candle making workshops, private events, and intimate concerts. This alternative gathering space welcomes people of all ages and gives people the chance to connect while engaging with their creative spirit.

Candles have been used for over 5000 years. Originally used as a utility item, candles have now become more of a luxury item with the invention of electricity. While we don’t need candles for light anymore, candles are deeply tied to our communities, as they are often used in ceremonial situations, including vigils, holidays, and cultural celebrations.

In addition to traditional pillar and votive styles, Brown and her staff create molded, decorative candles that may look like a stack of waffles, a bowl of cereal, or a pumpkin.

Brown invites people into the studio to make their own personalized scent blend with a customizable candle vessel. Fragrance is so personal and deeply connected to our memories. Brown describes the scent blending experience as an opportunity to go back in time, to travel the world, and to discover something new.

As a small business owner in Downtown Champaign, Brown feels supported by the local community and other small business owners. It’s a family that lifts each other up, joins in celebrations, and shares frustrations. She is excited to continue developing new ways to bring warmth and light into the Champaign community and beyond.
