Voters at Town Meeting Authorize Sale of Buildings

City of Champaign Township officials have the approval of voters to put the township’s two office buildings up for sale, and to purchase new facilities; at least, they have approval from the two dozen or so voters who showed up at the township’s annual town meeting at the Champaign City Building Tuesday night.

Those voters overwhelmingly approved a motion to allow the sale of the township supervisor’s and assessor’s offices by a vote of 23 to nothing with 3 abstentions.

A vote to allow the township to buy news facilities passed on a similar vote.
 
Tuesday’s vote only allows the potential sale of buildings and purchase of new facilities.

Township officials do not have a buyer lined up, or new property identified.

Champaign Mayor Don Gerard, who voted as an elector the s town meeting, suggested one facility that the township board had considered as a possible host for township offices.

“We had brought up at the study session the possibility utilizing some of the space at our public library," said Gerard, "seeing how it would be ADA, centrally located, and it would also help to ease the burden of the financial difficulties the library often sees if we were to combine some of these services.”
 
Any further action will require approval from the township board, whose members are also on the Champaign City Council.
