Police: U of I Student Made Terrorist-Like Threats
A University of Illinois student is in the Champaign County Jail for allegedly making terrorist-like threats to other students.
On Saturday, officers were called to a home in the 200 block of East Armory. Witnesses told police that Dany Sammak, 19, of Champaign repeatedly threatened other residents and those from the U of I, making references to the Virginia Tech shootings.
Witnesses also said Sammak frequently made shooting gestures with his hands at other residents.
Authorities obtained a search warrant for Sammak's residence, computer, and other personal property.
After a series of interviews and consulting with other agents around the world, the investigative team concluded Sammak is not part of a larger plot to harm others.
Sammak is charged with Disorderly Conduct, a Class 4 Felony. Bond has been set at $250,000.
"I commend the students who promptly reported this incident to law enforcement," said Champaign Police Chief Anthony Cobb. "I advise anyone who may be concerned about these types of threats to come forward immediately with information. It is always better to err on the side of caution in these types of cases."
The public is encouraged to contact Champaign Police at (217) 351-4545 or Crimestoppers (373-8477) with information pertaining to this case.
