Same-Sex Marriage Opponents Rally, Lobby Lawmakers
Opponents of same-sex marriage are staging their own event in Springfield, a day after thousands of supporters rallied for the legislation.
The "Defend Marriage Lobby Day'' began Wednesday with a morning prayer service outside the state Capitol. Attendees clustered around a large wooden cross that had been placed at the Lincoln statue.
Wednesday's events include pastors from a number of prominent Chicago area churches.
Opponents are trying to target moderate Republicans and socially conservative members of the House Black Caucus.
Same-sex marriage legislation passed the state Senate in February but hasn't been called in the House. Gay marriage activists say they're a handful of votes short.
The Legislature's second day of its annual fall session is expected to also include a hearing on gambling.
