National Organization Recognizes Champaign-Urbana For Immigration

A national group is recognizing Champaign-Urbana for its work to support immigrants in the community.
The New American Economy and Welcome America awarded Champaign-Urbana the Gateways for Growth Award—one of 25 communities in the country to receive the honor.
Mike Doyle, Executive Director of the University YMCA, believes the award reflects the community’s support for people looking for a better life in the United States.
"We believe that having a welcoming community where everyone is involved and participates makes our community strong and effective in addressing the needs of all of our residents," he said. "It’s both a recognition of what we’ve done, but also what we have the potential to accomplish."
The University YMCA took the lead in applying for the award. The organization partnered with the Champaign County Economic Development Corporation, the Research Park at the University of Illinois, and the cities of Champaign and Urbana.
The New American Economy will analyze local data about immigrants’ positive impact on the local economy.
Part of the award includes $25,000. That money will help build a New American Welcome Center to help immigrants become U.S. citizens and integrate into the community.
