Gov. Quinn Opposes Toxic Waste Disposal At Clinton Site

Gov. Pat Quinn is calling on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to block a proposal to dump toxic waste at a landfill located above an aquifer.

The Mahomet Aquifer supplies drinking water to hundreds of thousands of people in central Illinois.

The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers reports that Quinn wrote to the EPA on Wednesday, urging the project to be scrapped.

In his letter, Quinn contends the proposal to dispose of PCBs at the Clinton Landfill poses a "significant risk'' of contaminating the aquifer.

The company that owns the landfill has said it would install a liner to protect the water source.

A group of mayors from central Illinois appealed last week for Quinn to weigh in on the issue.
