Champaign Public Library Hosts Partial Solar Eclipse Viewing Party

Hundreds of people gathered at the Champaign Public Library to view Monday’s partial solar eclipse.
The library handed out glasses for sky watchers. Vendors and musicians entertained the crowd as the moon crossed in front of the sun.
10-year old Jorge Guera got a half day out of school for the occasion. “I was in school but I wanted to come see the eclipse here,” he said.
Emily Lewis says her kids drove south to be closer to Carbondale, but she and her husband were content to watch from the library. “We decided to stay here to see the eclipse. We have our great-granddaughter over here,” Lewis added.
Paula Watson had her family time a visit to see her in Urbana during the eclipse. She spoke to what many were feeling in being happy that the clouds broke enough to allow the sun through. Watson added, “We kept hoping the weather would be favorable and it looks like a miracle and the sun has come out.”
People who enjoyed this year’s eclipse can start planning for the next one now. This area is in line for another partial eclipse in 2024.
