Champaign Driver Services Facility Closing Saturday

After more than two years of air quality concerns, Champaign’s driver services facility will close its doors for good at 12 p.m. Saturday.

Secretary of State Spokesman Dave Drucker said the smaller sized building on Bradley Avenue led to some customers and employees becoming sick or getting headaches. 

Recent tests showed high levels of carbon dioxide.

The last couple of weeks, the number of people allowed in the building was limited, and those simply needing license plate stickers could get them in a tent next door.  

But Drucker said next week’s chilly forecast forced them to shut those services down.  He said finding a new location could take as long as six months.

“We’re very aggressively looking for somewhere else in the Champaign-Urbana community," he said.  "The time frame - the reason it takes this period of time - is that there are steps you have to do by a state procurement law in terms of seeking bids, and looking at the proposals, and that sort of thing.”

Drucker said customers in the area can visit driver facilities in Rantoul, Monticello, Tuscola, Tilton, and Bloomington.

The Champaign center’s 18 employees will be moved to those locations.
