Ammons Disappointed In AVR Reversal In House

State Representative Carol Ammons (D-Urbana) hopes to see another attempt next month at passing an automatic voter registration bill. The House this week fell four votes short of overriding Governor Bruce Rauner’s veto of that measure. Ammons says the governor’s concerns about voter fraud shouldn’t be enough to deny Illinois a progressive system that would automatically register residents to vote when they visit some state agencies.

She says a change is needed after what she describes as ‘destructive’ voter suppression during the Presidential election.

“And even leading up to that – to drop voters from the rolls, and all kinds of things," she said. "The repeal of protections in the voting rights act- all of these things should be basic rights in our democracy. But we still have to continue to fight for them.”

Ammons also disagrees with Rauner's demands for agreements with legislative leaders on term limits and a permanent property tax freeze before negotiating on a budget.  She says freezing taxes will only hurt local governments, as well as school and park districts.

Ammons, who was unopposed in last month’s election, starts her second term in Illinois’ 103rd District next month.
