John Barbirolli

In 1937, the then 36-year-old John Barbirolli took on "mission impossible": to fill the vacuum that maestro Arturo Toscanini left behind when he retired from the New York Philharmonic. But there was an ironic twist. Toscanini did not go away. He went to the NBC Symphony. Most of Barbirolli's N.Y. Phil. records have been newly released.

On Classics of the Phonograph, Saturday at 11 am on WILL-FM, we will sample some of them.
