Felix Mendelssohn was a child prodigy. From ages 12 to 14 years old (1821 to 1823), Felix wrote twelve string symphonies, and his wealthy family hired a small orchestra to play them. These works bear the marks of the masters he was studying, but they also express that special vitality of Mendelssohn’s mature works for orchestra. On this week's Classics of the Phonograph, Saturday at 11 am on WILL-FM, you will hear some of these early works of a genius.
