Anton Bruckner and Jean Sibelius
Composers of large scale works, like Anton Bruckner and Jean Sibelius, are not necessarily drawn to chamber music Bruckner wrote a String Quintet in 1879 at the suggestion of a chamber musician. Among some other chamber compositions, Sibelius’ 1909 String Quartet, entitled Intimate Voices, stands out as his masterpiece in this form. It was written between his Third and Fourth Symphonies, and is said to resemble both of them. On this week's Classics of the Phonograph, Saturday at 11 am on WILL-FM, you will hear some of these pieces from Bruckner and Sibelius.
