New book highlights documentary film production company’s work

For the last 58 years, Kartemquin Films in Chicago has been producing politically engaged and socially charged documentaries of consequence. It’s well-known for the critically acclaimed 1993 film Hoop Dreams about two inner city high school students in Chicago and their hopes of becoming professional basketball players.
Kartemquin documentaries have garnered Peabody Awards, Emmys and Oscar nominations. They’ve also become synonymous with public media, appearing on shows like Independent Lens and Frontline.
Now, the Illinois film studio and non-profit is the subject of a new book out last month, called "Kartemquin Films: Documentaries on the Frontlines of Democracy." The author of the book as well as one of the founders of Kartemquin Films join the 21st today.
