Illinois perspectives on Iran Protests
In September 2022, Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman, died shortly after being detained by Iran’s morality police. Since then, Iran has seen massive protests sweep across its streets. Many people protesting are young and female. They call for bodily autonomy, economic justice and an end to the authoritarian regime headed by 83-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has ruled Iran since 1989.
