Illinois reacts to leaked Supreme Court abortion ruling draft

People pray outside of the U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday, May 3, 2022 in Washington. A draft opinion suggests the U.S. Supreme Court could be poised to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion nationwide, according to a Politico report released Monday. Whatever the outcome, the Politico report represents an extremely rare breach of the court's secretive deliberation process, and on a case of surpassing importance.

Texts from The 21st listeners:

"One comment I heard in an interview that says it all for me I do not want to be put in a position where what happens to my personal body is decided by the likes of Ted Cruz." [Cruz is the Republican US Senator from Texas]

"I'm furious that half of the population's bodily autonomy hinges on a single court decision and not robust legislation or deep rights in the constitution. In our current system, a corpse gets more inherent rights than a pregnant person. What the actual hell?"

"For abortion to be protected by the due process clause it needs to be a right deeply entrenched in our nation's history and traditions. It is difficult to find this as a right before Roe."

"Overturn. It's murder.  1) if you don't want children you have multi-options. Don't have sex. 2) Use birth control which includes free birth control. But murder is MURDER. And the government, we the taxpayers have to pay for it."

"Why do men always hold women accountable for reproductive responsibility when it takes two to reproduce? When they take about fining or jailing women why not do the same for the man?"
