Highland Park Shooting One Year Later
July 4, 2023 marks one year since a mass shooting took place in Highland Park, Illinois, during the city’s Fourth of July parade. On that day, police say a young man went on the roof of a local business in the area and used a military-style rifle to shoot into a crowd of paradegoers. He killed seven people and left 48 others wounded. On Wednesday, July 27, 2022, Robert Crimo III was indicted by a grand jury on 21 first-degree murder counts, 48 counts of attempted murder, and 48 counts of aggravated battery in connection with the Fourth of July parade shooting in Highland Park. Since then, a push to ban the sale of assault weapons in Illinois became law in early January (although the measure has been challenged in court).
