Family of ISU student fleeing war in Ukraine
As we went to air on March 14, 2022, some 2.8 million people have fled the Russian war in Ukraine. Maryna Teplova’s daughter and granddaughter were among them. Teplova is currently a doctoral student in English at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal. She is originally from the east-central Ukrainian city of Dnipro.
A few days into the war, her daughter, Mariia, whom she calls Masha, and her 3-year-old granddaughter, Aphrodite, made the trip from their home in Ukraine to Poland, leaving most of their belongings behind. They are presently safe and staying with a relative in the Netherlands, or NL, as Teplova calls it in our discussion.
Host Brian Mackey taped a conversation with Teplova on March 11.
