East St. Louis instructor named teacher of the year
This year, the Illinois State Board of Education announced that Briana Morales, an 11th and 12th grade English and Language Arts teacher at the Gordon Bush Alternative Center in East St. Louis School District 189, was the 2023 Teacher of the Year. The district has lost many students to gun violence, and Ms. Morales has responded by helping her students process through the trauma by writing poetry.
She joined The 21st to talk about her role at the school, the changing perceptions of the role of teachers, and more.
