Cyclists bike on Illinois railways turned to trails

Reginald Hardwick/Illinois Newsroom

A rail trail is a pathway that's usually located alongside active railways or on inactive railways and can be used by pedestrians, cyclists and joggers or even horseback riders. Rail trails offer rich history on the location, besides also being a great (and free) way to be active and enjoy nature, and you can find them all across Illinois!

The 21st was joined by two writers that have documented their experiences and knowledge of the trails to talk about the rail trails across Illinois.
