American Mariachi Fills Illinois Theater
The play “American Mariachi” is in the midst of its Chicago debut. Now through October 24, it is playing at the Goodman Theater. Set in the 1970s, it tells the story of a young woman, Lucha, caring for her mother, Amalia, who is suffering from dementia. One day, Lucha plays a record of mariachi songs, which jogs her mother’s memory and inspires Lucha to start an all-female mariachi band — something that would have been unheard of back in the ’70s. To talk about the show and its debut, The 21st was joined by the play's director.
