Nurses are the people who care for us. But what about how we care for them? A new report from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign finds that 90 percent of nurses surveyed in Illinois experienced some form of violence at least once over the past year. What’s more, 50 percent of those nurses said they experienced it six or more times in that same time period.
This survey highlights a harsh reality that nurses around that state have been dealing with. Just last year, two seperate hostage situations happened involving nurses - one in Geneva and one in Joliet. The situation in Geneva led to the sexual assault of one nurse when the prisoner was left unshackled and the deputy had been found sleeping.
House Bill 4100 is an effort to remedy some of this. It passed the house yesterday. The bill would require violence-prevention training as well as whistleblower protections for workers who report assaults.
We spoke with Alice Johnson who is the Executive Director of the Illinois Nurses Association. We also had the chance to speak with State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit. She represents Illinois’ 84th districts which includes the Chicago suburbs of Aurora, Naperville and Oswego. She is a co-sponsor of the Healthcare Worker Violence Prevention Act.

When immigrants come to Illinois, where do they go? Chicago, for sure. But also, it turns out, central Illinois and - specifically Champaign County.
Foreign-born people make up 1 in 5 residents in Urbana - 1 in 8 in Champaign and 1 in 10 in the county. And it’s not just students at the U of I.
We know this because of a new report about immigrants - it’s part of a national study from the New America Economy. It was created locally here by the New America Welcome Center at the University YMCA.
To talk about this, we were joined by Chris DiFranco from the New American Welcome Center at the University YMCA, Minister Cesar M’nyampara from Champaign’s First Presbyterian Church and Mayor Diane Marlin from Urbana.
