The First Gubernatorial Debate; Injuries In Youth Sports; Fixing Potholes With Art
On the 21st: We unpack what we heard from the a combative gubernatorial debate on Thursday. Plus, we talked with a pediatric orthopedist and athletic trainers to talk about sports for kids, and how hard they can be on growing children’s bodies. Also, we revisit the story of a street artist who leaves art for the public, in the form of filling potholes.
On Thursday night, Sept. 20, the four men who want to serve as Illinois governor met for their first debate. That was Governor Bruce Rauner, JB Pritzker, Kash Jackson, and state Senator Sam McCann.
It was a contentious debate with lots of personal attacks between the four candidates. Election day is just 43 days away and we wanted to unpack what we heard on Thursday night and get an update on this governor’s race.
Amanda Vinicky joined us, she is a correspondent with WTTW’s Chicago Tonight. And Rick Pearson, a political reporter with the Chicago Tribune, was also on the line with us.
When it comes to income taxes, we didn't learn anything more from the candidates at the debate explains @rap30. "And we won't before the election." #twill

And --
It’s been a month since the school year started back up again, many of you listening out there may have kids involved with sports who have been been practicing all summer long. Or, maybe this is the time of the year when they will pick up a new sport -- be it swimming, tennis or basketball.
This is a good thing - something we encourage when it comes to making friends and spending time outdoors. But, is there such a thing as too much sports?
We revisit our conversation from earlier this year with some medical experts who are worried that overdoing sports could lead to longterm injuries. Dr. Cynthia LaBella was on the line with us, she is a Pediatric Orthopedist at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine & Lurie Children’s Hospital. Brendan McHale was in the studio with us in Urbana. He’s the Supervisor of Sports Medicine and Athletic Training Services at the Carle Foundation Hospital. And Kurt Gibson joined us, he is the Associate Executive Director of the Illinois High School Association.
"We can always ask the children to listen to their bodies but sometimes they don't quite know what to listen for... that's why communication from the parents is important," says Brendan McHale from @Carle_org "Sometimes they just need a day off."

Plus --
If you’re driving on the road, you’ve probably hit a pothole at one point or another. It’s especially bad here in the Midwest. And one artist has been taking matters into his own hands for years, by not just filling potholes himself, but by adding his own mosaic street art for all to see.
Jim Bachor is a graphic and mosaic artist in Chicago. His designs are whimsical, sometimes political, and always colorful and intricate.
Just last week, Jim installed 10 pothole mosaics in his hometown of Detroit including one of a raw chicken and one of Aretha Franklin.
Back in June, he joined us from our studios at Northwestern University. We spoke to him about the story of how it all started, one night 5 years ago.
"The last thing you'd expect in a nasty pothole is a spray of tulips. And I like it, it's kind of like an unexpected grin," says @bachor. pic.twitter.com/C8f75BHnKF
